The exhibition project Middle Gate II – The Story of Dymphna is a collaboration between M HKA (Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp) and the cultural centre de Werft in Geel. Middle Gate II is the follow up to the exhibition Middle Gate, curated by Jan Hoet in Geel in 2013. The exhibition concept is closely tied to the legend of the holy Dymphna, saint of the possessed, the mentally ill and patroness against epilepsy and insanity. The legend of Dymphna shares a strong connection to the identity of Geel, "the charitable city".

Zelfportret in huiskamer [Self-Portrait in Living Room], 1991
Painting , 194 x 205 cm
acrylic, canvas

From 1988 Bervoets his work sobers up and becomes visibly more austere. This is also reflected in his self-portraits. Zelfportret in huiskamer is an example of his ‘White Series’: the white surface of the canvas is just as important as the areas covered with paint. Bervoet’s home environment and family situation is another recurrent subject matter. For him, family life is both a pain and the ultimate bliss. In his many etchings and paintings on this theme we encounter simple compositions with just a few centrally located and almost linear figures.
