Middle Gate

    The exhibition project Middle Gate II – The Story of Dymphna is a collaboration between M HKA (Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp) and the cultural centre de Werft in Geel. Middle Gate II is the follow up to the exhibition Middle Gate, curated by Jan Hoet in Geel in 2013. The exhibition concept is closely tied to the legend of the holy Dymphna, saint of the possessed, the mentally ill and patroness against epilepsy and insanity. The legend of Dymphna shares a strong connection to the identity of Geel, "the charitable city".

    “The boxes are my most personal work. I decided that I was one being and that I would divide myself into a thousand pieces. And the boxes are all me. The boxes are all me because they are my infinite mirror. The boxes are all my philosophy, life, my feminine side, my masculine side, my ethnological side, my religious side. They are the doubling of myself to the infinite degree. The project with the boxes, [Inside Out], is my most metaphysical work, and it came to me as an obligatory answer to the beauty and the consideration of the small space. I realized that this work needed to be concentrated in a small format, and in a space that when opened was revealed to be a great space. Then I discovered that the boxes have a power in transforming themselves from one into the other, they are all a hermeneutics of my soul. I decided that I could rip my soul into a hundred thousand pieces, and all of them are a reflection of myself.”
